Sources say the Department of Correction has opened a criminal investigation into a Rikers Island inmate who allegedly attacked a graduate student volunteer.

Sources say the inmate grabbed the Adelphi University Psychological Studies student from behind and knocked her to the floor in the mental health observation unit.

She suffered cuts and bruises to her left knee during the attack, according to sources.

A jail source says the inmate also pulled up her skirt.

The source went on to say that the correction officer escorting the volunteer did not come to the woman's aid until another inmate punched her attacker.

In response, the DOC released a statement that read, in part "Video records show an officer walking with the clinician and responding immediately to the inmate’s inappropriate action. We are taking all necessary steps to hold this inmate accountable."

Sources identify the attacker as Duane Belcher, who's been indicted on numerous charges of assault and sexual abuse in both Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The incident comes on the heels of another attack at Rikers Island last week, when an inmate punched an intern, breaking her jaw. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
