Mayor Bill de Blasio made a Monday morning appearance on The View with First Lady Chirlane McCray.

The two talked about several topics, but kept the mood mostly light with stories about their relationship.

McCray: Bill's mom objected more than anyone.
de Blasio: And I love her, but it's true. She had to get used to it. Later, Chirlane became her best friend. I do want to tell the happy ending.
McCray: After the children came.
Walters: It was a courageous thing to do at the time, wasn't it?
McCray: I guess it was. I don't think we thought much of it because we loved each other so much, but there were stares and taunts.

De Blasio proclaimed May 16 "Barbara Walters Day" in honor of the show's creator.

The legendary newswoman is retiring after five decades in the television business.
