The East Side Access project, which will bring Long Island Rail Road trains to Grand Central, has taken another step forward this week by awarding two major construction contracts.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has entered into agreements worth more than $625 million combined.
One contract covers communications and fire prevention systems in the passenger concourses and new tunnels north of Grand Central.
The other is for rehabilitation including new walls and electrical and plumbing systems in an existing stretch of tunnel under the East River and 63rd Street.
The new rail line and terminal is expected to open in August 2019.
