The Manhattan-bound side of the deteriorating Pulaski Skyway, which serves commuters from northern New Jersey, is closing for two years.
Repairs to the three-and-a-half-mile bridge include replacing roadway decks, railings and drainage systems.
It will cost about $1 billion.
The lanes for cars coming into Manhattan will close Saturday.
Waterway ferry service from Belford, N.J. to Lower Manhattan offers alternative travel to the skyway.
