The lawyer for the family of Avonte Oquendo says newly obtained video shows the 14-year-old trying to run away the day before he went missing.
In the video, you can see Avonte running through the halls unattended.
You can also see another student and school safety officer present at the time.
The family's lawyer, David Perecman, says he was trying to go from the second floor to the first.
He says the school knew that Avonte was prone to running away, and this incident should have given them clues about where he went the day he disappeared.
"Now, if you know he ran away the day before, even if you were bad enough that you missed it and he got off the line, why does it take you, what appears in the records, 20 minutes while everyone's running around inside the building when you know the day before, he went to the first floor," Perecman said.
Perceman says the new video proves that there was a breakdown in communication in the school.
He says he hopes that this incident will bring major changes to education and police department protocols.
The 14-year-old disappeared from his Long Island City school in October last year.
His body was found in the East River in Queens in January.
