License plates for first responders will soon have distinctive red letters.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says the plates come in response to recent natural disasters and extreme weather, including Hurricane Sandy.
The plates will include an "EM" sticker and are designed to help emergency workers gain quicker access to areas impacted by an emergency.
Officials say it's all part of a larger effort to better manage disasters.
In a statement, Cuomo said, "We are reimagining every part of how our state responds so that when the next storm comes, we are ready."
