A correction officer has been taken into police custody after a man was shot and killed Thursday in the Bronx.
Police say it happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday on East 242nd Street near Barnes Avenue.
They say the man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
Norman Seabrook, the president of the correction officers' union, said on NY1's Inside City Hall that the shooting involved an officer and his daughter's boyfriend.
"A struggle ensured over his gun, and the violence took place and the gun went off," Seabrook said. "When the gun went off, it tragically killed the young man, and the correction officer is distraught over this and feels a lot of pain, but it's unfortunate. But it was a matter of self-defense."
Seabrook said that the district attorney and police are investigating, and that "everyone involved believes this is a case of self-defense."
