A Brooklyn great grandmother says her 6-year-old great grandson, who has a brain tumor, was able to leave school unnoticed earlier this week.
In an exclusive interview, Maria Vega tells NY1 her great grandson, Luis Acevedo, left PS 305 on Monroe Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Tuesday and walked two blocks home alone.
The boy says he went to the school nurse with a stomach ache before deciding to leave.
"I told the nurse if she going to call my grandmother and she said no. So I walked out the school and I walked home by myself," Acevedo said.
Vega says she has tried to file a complaint with the Department of Education but her phone calls have gone unreturned.
The DOE recently said proposed legislation calling for alarms on school doors is too expensive, saying the solution is to better train school employees.
A DOE spokesperson issued a statement to NY1 that read, "The child reportedly walked out of school and was found at home. The matter is under investigation."
