A major makeover is in store for the George Washington Bridge.
The Port Authority says its setting aside more than one billion dollars to revamp the GWB beginning in 2017.
The first step will be to replace the nearly 600 suspension ropes holding up the 82-year-old bridge.
Other projects include fixing the span's main cables, improving the lighting system on the bridge's walkways, making sidewalk access easier to those with disabilities and installing technology that can warn engineers to structural problems.
Drivers should expect off-peak traffic closures during the construction.
