The first day of spring may have arrived, but the city sanitation department is feeling the financial strain of this past winter.

Speaking before the City Council for the last time as Sanitation Commissioner on Wednesday, John Doherty estimated the cost for this year's snow removal budget could inflate to as high as $132 million, far higher than the $57 million the department set aside.

That's after factoring in overtime pay for workers, fuel for trucks, and other snow related expenses.

This is the second time the department has had to make budgetary changes due to unexpected levels of snow. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
