Police are investigating the assault of a livery cab driver in Brooklyn.
It happened on West 11th Street in East New York at around 4 a.m. Sunday.
The Federation of Taxi Drivers says Salomon Alcantara had just finished driving a man round-trip when a passenger beat him and badly slashed his face and head.
Alcantara says that the man left with an undisclosed amount of money.
Alcantara was taken to Lutheran Hospital, where he received stitches.
"Well right now, I'm scared. I do this myself, and all I can say is, thank God he's alive," said Maritza Alcantara, the victim's wife.
"It's totally unnecessary for you to brutally beat a man that's out there trying to make a living," said Fernando Mateo, spokesman for the state Federation of Taxi Drivers.
A federation spokesman said that the suspect has been described to police and that cameras in the area caught some of what happened.
