The Panel For Educational Policy has delayed a vote that would relocate some Queens kindergarten students while their school is repaired.

P.S. 11 in Woodside has to be renovated because the school is overcrowded.

The Department of Education wanted to bus the students to P.S. 171 three miles away in Astoria, but parents said that that would put as many as 45 kids in a classroom.

The Community and Citywide Education Council wants the panel to delay construction a year, but the Department of Education says they'll lose funding if they don't start building this year.

"There are other solutions," said Valarie Lamour of the Community and Citywide Education Council. "I personally believe that maybe the older children are the ones who should be bussed."

"All alternatives, including the proposal by Assemblywoman Nolan to temporarily use space at other venues, including St. Theresa's School, for one year, must be considered to ensure that these young children receive a quality education without having to be uprooted from their home community," said one person at the hearing.

The vote will now take place in April.

The decision came at the first meeting of the Panel for Educational Policy under a new schools chancellor. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
