Eight people were hurt Monday morning after a car crashed through a storefront in the Bronx.

Fire officials say they believe the driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.

The crash happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. on East Avenue.

Witnesses say they smelled gas and saw smoke after the crash as crews rushed to remove the car from the building.

"Because like I said, when he went up in, he ripped the gas 'cause the gas tank underneath, so they was trying to pull it out before the car would explode," said one person at the scene.

The driver, who has not yet been identified, is not facing charges.

Five of the victims suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
