Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has struck a deal with Facebook to curb illegal gun sales on social media.

Facebook agreed to delete posts from users looking to buy or sell weapons illegally or without a background check.

The same policy will apply to Instagram, Facebook's photo-sharing app.

Facebook says that the initiative will rely on reports from users and police.

"If you see someone saying, 'AK-47 for sale, no background check,' hit report, send it to the folks at Facebook," Schneiderman said. "They have tens of thousands of these reports all the time. They have a crew that looks at them, and now, they have a dedicated group and have elevated the issue of illegal sales of firearms, so we're very, very hopeful that this is going to really close down a lot of illegal sales."

The measures will be put into effect in the next few weeks. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
