Rangers captain Ryan Callahan is a Blueshirt no more after being traded on the National Hockey League's trade deadline day.

Callahan is a free agent after this season.

He and the team were trying to reach agreement on a new long-term contract, but that effort failed.

Callahan has been traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning for 38-year-old Martin St. Louis.

The Rangers also included a first- and second-round draft pick.

Callahan first played for the Rangers in 2006-2007.

His first full season with the team came a year later.

He came to symbolize the heart and soul of the team under John Tortorella, a hard-working, shot-blocking forward beloved by the fans for his fearless style of play.

There was some indication that the two sides were getting closer to a six-year contract deal, but in the end, they couldn't get close enough.

St. Louis won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004 and is still one of the leading offensive players in the league.

He has an off season home in Greenwich, Conn. and recently requested a trade to the Rangers.

The Rangers were faced with losing Callahan for nothing if he had become a free agent this summer.

Meanwhile, the New York Islanders traded forward Thomas Vanek to the Montreal Canadiens for Swedish prospect Sebastian Collberg.

The Islanders will also receive a second-round pick from the Canadiens, and will send a fifth-round pick to Montreal, if the Canadiens make the playoffs.
