Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday called on the federal government to improve rail safety standards across the state.
In a letter to Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, Cuomo called for railroad companies to be required to report derailments, increase inspections and more clearly identify rail cars carrying crude oil.
He also wants crude oil added to the list of hazardous materials that homeland security tracks.
Last week, Sen. Charles Schumer called for rail companies to get rid of outdated cars by July 1.
He also wants the speed limit changed from 50 to 40 mph in major cities.
