The New York City Fire Department says that the fire that killed a 38-year-old-man early Saturday morning in Brooklyn was started by somebody smoking.

The victim has been identified as Joseph Barbara.

Firefighters first received a call just after midnight alerting them about the house fire on 73rd Street near the corner of 18th Avenue in Bensonhurst.

The battalion chief says it took 60 firefighters about an hour to put it out.

"In the middle of the second floor, there was one victim that was found by the ladder company," said Chief Brian Duffy of the FDNY. "He was taken down to the front door, handed off to EMS."

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
