Fairway Market held a fundraiser Thursday for theater journalist Randy Gener, who remains hospitalized after an assault last month.
Activists and family members organized a "Shopping Night" at Fairway Market in Chelsea, where 25 percent of sales from registered shoppers went toward paying Gener's medical expenses.
Many customers NY1 spoke with said that they were glad to help out.
"The abuse of anyone, anywhere, in any place, in any city is a crime that everyone should be appalled by, and if my signing a little piece of paper can help this guy out, then I can't think of why any person wouldn't join me," said one customer.
"I think it's a tragedy, and I'm sure he needs all the support he can get," said another.
"I think it's wonderful. I think more stores should take on that," said a third.
On January 17, the 54-year-old was punched several times and left unconscious on the street in Midtown.
Police have made an arrest in connection with the attack.
