First Lady Michelle Obama made a swing through the city Thursday, taping an appearance for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, checking out some art downtown and, of course, raising some campaign cash. NY1's Bobby Cuza filed the following report.

Michelle Obama's first order of business in the city Thursday was checking out the downtown art scene, specifically, an exhibit at the New Museum featuring the work of 14 street artists, each with a water theme. It was a way to promote the First Lady's "Drink Up" campaign, which encourages kids to opt for water in place of sugary beverages.

She also met with a group of local eighth graders participating in the campaign and contributing their own artwork.

Trey Speegle is one of the featured artists and is also collaborating with the students.

"She's a superstar," Speegle said. "She's so easy with them, and gracious, and charming, and kind."

"I thought she was really energetic and exciting, and she had a great energy around her that made people, I feel like, and my classmates would agree, that she felt really great to be around," said eighth grader Rose Stewart-Chapman.

As is often the case when the Obamas come to town, the first lady spent part of her time in the city doing some fundraising, attending a Democratic party fundraiser hosted by event planning and marketing executive Maneesh Goyle. Then, it was up to Midtown for a taping of The Tonight Show with new host Jimmy Fallon.

As for Drink Up, it's part of the first lady's now-four-year-old initiative to combat child obesity, the Partnership for a Healthier America.

"The fact that she gets involved and puts attention on this issue, it just causes people to be more aware of it," Speegle said. "And just, adults, like, drink more water. It's just not a bad idea for anybody." ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
