A man with a history of rape charges was arrested Tuesday for allegedly attempting another attack on a teenager in East Harlem.
Police say it happened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday morning.
They say a 19-year-old woman had just gotten out of a cab and was walking along Madison Avenue when a man grabbed her from behind and threw her between two parked cars.
The suspect repeatedly slammed her head into the ice and snow, according to police.
Police say a witness heard the woman screaming and called 911.
Demetrius Edwards, 34, was arrested a short time later and charged with attempted rape.
Investigators say Edwards was arrested three times between 1998 and 2001, twice for rape and once for sex abuse.
He was released on parole last September.
"I'm afraid, 'cause I don't want to be the one to get out of a cab and get attacked," said one person.
"I'm very sad to hear that happen, and hopefully, we can keep working together in our community to make some changes," said another.
The victim was taken to Harlem Hospital, where she was treated and released.
