The New York City Police Department is testing out some new wearable technology by Google that will help officers quickly gather information about a suspect.

Google Glass is a computerized, Internet-connected set of specs that allow wearers to surf the web, ask directions or take photos and video.

Manufacturers say it's like wearing a smartphone, without having to hold it in your hands.

"We're in the process of field-testing that technology in a variety of circumstances, seeing where - if useful - where it might be most useful, most beneficial," said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton. "The department is making great advances, as is the profession, as is society, in facial-recognition technology. It's one of the exciting new frontiers that we've only, I think, begun to see the tip of the iceberg in terms of its full benefit."

The technology could help officers quickly gather information about a suspect.

The glasses will be made available to the general public later this year.
