A new program to kickstart the city's fashion industry got off the runway Thursday.
As Fashion Week began, Mayor Bill de Blasio named the seven winning firms that will be awarded between $46,000 and $150,000 grants to improve facilities and train workers.
The seven winners were selected from a batch of 40 applicants.
It's all part of the "Fashion Manufacturing Initiative."
"The goal of this initiative - very straight forward, very important - is to strengthen the fashion industry in this city," de Blasio said. "This is an imperative, this a strategic, important matter for the people of this city. "
In all, the city kicked in $1 million, with another $2 million coming from private interests.
