After 35 years at the helm of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Karen Brooks Hopkins has announced she is stepping down.

Hopkins has served as president of BAM since 1979, leading the venue's transformation into one of Brooklyn's cultural hubs.

Hopkins is credited with expanding facilities for the performing arts and film, launching several citywide cultural and arts festivals, and bringing new life to community programming and workshops.

Mayor Bill de Blasio named her to his transition team in November of last year.

She will complete her tenure as president of BAM in June of 2015. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
