Protesters who demonstrated near LaGuardia Airport about workers' wages are celebrating after the Port Authority ordered major airlines to issues raises.
Some 8,000 contract workers at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports who currently make $9 or less an hour will get an immediate $1 an hour raise to eventually reach $10.10 an hour.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day will also be paid holiday for airport workers.
Rep. Charles Rangel was among those who were arrested at the protest.
He discussed the issue on NY1 Noticias.
"I don't like getting arrested. And the fact is that there's so many people that have absolutely no power and have no hope, and they work every day and they still live in poverty," Rangel said. "I thought, and 32BJ, the union, thought that if I could use my name, my title to show the world that this is unfair."
Rangel said that he's satisfied with the Port Authority's action, but he said that there are a lot more low wage workers to fight for.
