Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is urging President Barack Obama to mention student loan debt relief in his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Gillibrand says the average college grad in New York state owes more than $27,000.

She wants Obama to push for legislation aimed at decreasing the financial burden of federal student loans by allowing millions of borrowers to refinance at a lower interest rate.

Gillibrand says there is roughly $1.2 trillion worth of student loan debt weighing on students and their families nationwide, and helping folks to refinance could free up disposable income and boost the economy.
