Long Island Railroad employees could walk out on strike as early as March.
The local transit unions have authorized a possible job action for March 1.
The president of Transport Workers Union local 100 says the MTA needs to either accept a compromise plan proposed by federal arbitrators or allow a final round of contract mediations.
The new round of proposed talks would create a new cooling off period that would put off a potential strike until the summer at the earliest.
The LIRR is the busiest commuter railroad in North America, carrying an average of more than 300,000 customers each day.
