The first signs of Super Bowl fever can be seen in Midtown. Installations are being moved in along Broadway north of 42nd Street as organizers plan to turn a chunk of Manhattan into Super Bowl Boulevard. Jon Weinstein filed the following report.

Times Square's transformation into Super Bowl Boulevard is officially underway.

“It's chaos, but its pretty cool, you can see that fun things are gonna happen here,” said one onlooker.

“I walk by here, I walk through here every day, so it's been cool to see it kind of come together piece by piece and I’m sure in the coming days it's gonna take on a whole new element,” said another.

You bet it will. Broadway from 34th to 47th Street will become a football fan fest, basically a theme park with a toboggan ride, field goal kick and more. The massive fan event will be free and will include football competitions, nightly concerts and a display of the Vince Lombardi trophy.

“It brings people into the city and helps the economy and everybody is having fun,” said a third onlooker.

The attractions won't open until January 29, but with so much work needed to set it all up, preparations are already in high gear.

“There's a ton of work going on right now, all over the place. Our local is really busy, everyone's working,” said one of the workers.

Anticipation is growing for everyone, including people who work in the area and stand to benefit from an influx of visitors.

“Very excited because we want people to come in, people come in and business is going to boost up,” said an onlooker.

Along with the fun will come some added congestion. Businesses are being asked to change their delivery schedules and in addition to closures on Broadway, 41st Street will be closed to cross-town traffic at times. But ultimately New Yorkers seem to be taking that stuff in stride.

“Times Square is always full of something, it's always full of tourists and personally I think it is gonna be a bit of a headache but it'll be a fun headache. It's gonna bring a lot of people to the city and for that I'll put up with the headache,” said a woman in Times Square on Sunday morning.

One other potential headache is the weather. Though we won't know for a little while longer how that will play out, we can cross our fingers. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
