A proposed pay hike for Long Island Rail Road workers on Wednesday got the thumbs down from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The agency rejected it saying it was not possible without increasing a fare hike that's already scheduled to take place next year and again in 2017.

Workers have been without a contract since 2010.

The rejection of a proposed pay hike opens the door to a possible summer strike.
