Federal investigators say that the deadly Metro-North train derailment in the Bronx caused more than $9 million in damages to the railroad.

The figure comes from the National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report on the incident.

The report reaffirms that all the equipment was functioning properly, bolstering allegations that human error may have led to the derailment.

The report itself did not touch on the human factor, or whether improved technology would have prevented the incident.

Four people were killed and dozens hurt in the crash on December 1.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority could incur even more costs as a result of personal injury lawsuits.

In the meantime, Sen. Charles Schumer says that the proposed federal budget would provide funding for 45 new Federal Railroad Administration inspectors if passed.
