The Port Authority says its commercial airports smashed the all-time record last year with an estimated 111.6 million passengers.

The previous record was a little more than 110 million, set back in 2007.

JFK Airport set two other records: One for the most passengers in a year, with approximately 50 million people passing through their gates, and another for having the most international travelers with approximately 26 million.

The Port Authority says LaGuardia also set a new annual record with approximately 1.6 million passengers traveling through the airport this past year.

Officials say the numbers illustrate the importance of investing in improvements, such as rebuilding runways and high speed taxiways to alleviate congestion and delays. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
