A 112-year-old tradition is coming to an end as Cooper Union reaffirmed Friday that it will begin charging tuition starting in the fall.

The school's Board of Trustees confirmed their April decision to charge 50 percent of what would be the normal tuition.

Cooper Union has traditionally offered full scholarships for all students, but now, the school will use need-based financial aid.

The decision comes after months of student protests and board negotiations.

The new tuition plan will go into effect for students entering in the fall of 2014.

Current Cooper Union students will continue to receive full scholarships.
