The Prospect Park Zoo is welcoming a new species with the arrival of three demoiselle cranes.

Zoo officials say they are the smallest species of crane, but take one of the toughest migratory routes in the world.

The birds nest to the north of the Himalayan mountains, but when the weather gets cold, they fly over them to get to warmer weather, sometimes reaching altitudes of 26,000 feet.

The zoo says that the birds are not endangered, but populations are decreasing in some areas because of habitat loss.
