Police are investigating after a 4-year-old boy died after being found unconscious in a Manhattan apartment late Wednesday morning.

Authorities responded to a call of an unconscious child at a building on West 48th Street at around 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The child was taken to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Associated Press reports that the boy was staying with a 37-year-old woman because his father had been jailed and his mother lost custody.

Police say that woman told investigators that she left the child on a bathroom counter.

She said she walked out of the room and came back when she heard a noise, and found the boy unconscious in an empty bathtub.

Police are saying that the child had "bruising and trauma."

The medical examiner's office will determine the official cause of death.

The Administration for Children's Services says it's also investigating. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
