A judge's ruling may force New York University to alter its controversial expansion plan.
State Supreme Court Judge Donna Mills ruled that NYU must get approval from the state legislature to continue with any part of their 1.9 million-square-foot expansion that would impact public park space in Greenwich Village.
The site in question is a six-block area between West Houston Street, LaGuardia Place, West Third Street and Mercer Street.
The community groups and residents who filed suit in 2012 against NYU are calling the ruling a victory, as they say expansion would destroy the neighborhood.
NYU says that the first phase of the expansion is not affected by this ruling because no park space will be impacted.
The city says the decision is under review.
