The countdown is on to 2015.

The nearly 12,000-pound Waterford Crystal New Year's Eve ball was lifted back onto its perch at One Times Square Monday, where it will be for the rest of the year.

It was re-lit to show off the more than 32,000 LED lights that adorn the sphere.

Officials say it gives visitors a chance to re-live the festivities.

"Throughout the year, there's many, many tourists that pass through Times Square, and one of things that they're always looking for is the New Year's Ball because they're one of over a billion people worldwide that have seen the celebration."

The ball's designer was presented with the Extraordinary Welding Award from the American Welding Society.

Re-lighting the ball and having it stay on its perch for the entire year is a tradition started back in 2008.
