Several dozen of the city's firefighters are moving up the ranks to start off the new year.
Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano welcomed lieutenants, captains, chiefs and more into their new positions within the department at a ceremony Thursday.
The 83 promoted firefighters will be assigned to units throughout the city.
"People that want to step into the leadership role. That's what's so good about this department, is people are willing to take on responsibilities, and that's how we get through very difficult times," Cassano said. "We're preparing for a snowstorm today. We have great leaders in the field, and there's 83 more that are going to be out there."
The promoted firefighters have more than 1,200 years of combined experience.
