Most New Yorkers wouldn't dream of going for a swim on New Year's Day, but don't tell that to the Coney Island Polar Bear Club.
The cold weather didn't stop brave souls from taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean for what is a quintessential New York tradition.
The water temperatures were as low as 36 degrees, but that didn't seem to matter to the polar bears.
"This is January? I thought it was July 4th weekend," said one person. "Oh my God, I'm freezing now. Why did you tell me that?"
"My feet are numb," said another. "This is my first time jumping in. It was great."
For the eighth straight year, proceeds raised from the dip will go to Camp Sunshine, a facility that offers children with life-threatening illnesses and their families a place to relax for a week.
