Today marks the first day of Kwanzaa.

Seven traditional Kinara candles will be lit over the next week at the African Burial Ground National Monument in Manhattan. The site will host Kwanzaa ceremonies, events and activities.

The non-religious holiday celebrates African culture and traditions, and was first observed in 1966.

Kwanzaa runs through January 1.
