In his annual Christmas address, President Barack Obama urges Americans to embrace the spirit of the season by volunteering.

First Lady Michelle Obama also said the nation should express gratitude for military families as more troops return home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Obamas pointed to the many different ways people can help others.

"So many people all across the country are helping out at soup kitchens, buying gifts for children in need or organizing food or clothing drives for their neighbors. For families like ours, that service is a chance to celebrate the birth of Christ and live out what he taught us,” Obama said.

The First Family is spending Christmas in Hawaii as they do every year.
