City officials are one step closer to cracking down on the use of electronic cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that simulate smoking by creating a vapor.

Members of the City Council's health committee passed a measure Wednesday that would stop people from smoking e-cigarettes in the same areas of the city where actual tobacco smoking is not allowed.

Opponents of the measure say e-cigarettes are a way to help smokers quit, but some council members disagree.

"Manufacturers of the devices are really in the addiction business," said City Councilman James Gennaro of Queens. "This is what they're selling. They're selling addiction. They're selling in flavors like cotton candy, Cap'n Crunch, and all these flavors that appeal to kids. This is what this is about."

The organization "New Yorkers Against the Electronic Cigarette Ban" said that they are disappointed with the Health Committee vote and feel that the decision was not an informed or educated one.

The full Council is expected to vote on the measure Thursday. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
