The Senate on Monday confirmed New York native Jeh Johnson to serve as the nation’s next Homeland Security Secretary. Geoff Bennett filed the following report.

Our Washington bureau reporter Geoff Bennett has the story.

Confirmed by a vote of 78 to 16, New York native Jeh Johnson will serve as the country’s fourth secretary of Homeland Security.

Johnson’s confirmation emerged from the collateral damage in the war being waged in the Senate, after Majority Leader Harry Reid ended Senate Republicans’ ability to filibuster certain presidential nominees.

Johnson now inherits a sprawling department with a major leadership vacuum and low staff morale. Employees consistently rank Homeland Security in surveys as one of the worst places to work in the federal government. Some lawmakers see the dysfunction as a security risk.

Democrats and Republicans also say they want to know more about Johnson's views.

As the Pentagon's top lawyer, Johnson wrote the legal defense for using weaponized drones overseas. That’s earned the suspicion of some progressives.

Conservatives say they want to know more about where Johnson stands on immigration policy.

But Johnson is said to support the views of the administration he now joins. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
