A 21-year-old woman was attacked early Monday morning after police say she responded to a knock on her apartment door.
It happened just before 2:30 a.m. in a building on Lexington Avenue in Kips Bay.
Police say the man claimed to have her lost wallet.
"It's really scary you think you're trying, you know that someone is doing something nice for you, but for them to take advantage of that and to attack somebody is absolutely disgusting," said one Kips Bay resident.
"It's really scary, you don't know who is going to be at your door and you just gotta be real careful, and really smart, and watch your back," said another Kips Bay resident.
The woman was treated for cuts and bruises at the hospital.
No motive has been released.
