Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show Friday that critics of a new vaccine requirement for the city's child care programs are dangerously misinformed.

Last week, the Board of Health made flu shots mandatory for all children enrolled in city day care ages 5 and under.

Some activists strongly oppose the measure, saying that vaccines in young children can be harmful, even causing disorders like autism or death.

On his weekly radio show, Bloomberg had strong words for critics.

"Literally not true," he said. "I can tell you what does kill kids is no flu shot. It's one of those things that there's some crazies that, life of its own without thinking. I don't know whether they think it's cute to go out and yell and scream, but you really hurt people."

Under the new rules, parents will have to prove their kids were vaccinated by December 31 of each year, starting in 2014.

This was Bloomberg's second-to-last weekly appearance on John Gambling's show.

Not only is the mayor reaching the end of his term, but Gambling himself is retiring next Friday.
