Officials are asking the federal government for help to build a dune system that would protect Breezy Point residents against waves and prevent flooding in the future.

The Queens neighborhood saw more than 300 homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and another 2,000 flooded.

The city submitted a request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to fund the $58 million project.

A similar system is in place on parts of Rockaway peninsula, but not Breezy Point.
