A Yankees legend is heading to Cooperstown.

Joe Torre is one of three retired managers being admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame next year.

Torre, former Athletics and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and former Braves manager Bobby Cox were unanimously elected Monday by a committee that included 16 ex-players, executives and historians.

Torre's impressive resume includes 18 seasons as a player. He was a nine-time All-Star and won the National League MVP award in 1971.

Prior to managing the Yankees, he also managed the Mets, Braves and Cardinals.

His time as manager of the Yankees included four World Series titles and six World Series appearances. The team made the playoffs all 12 years that he was in charge.

Torre was asked on Monday to compare his Hall election to winning his first World Series in 1996.

"It's different. It's different," he said. "I always obsessed about a World Series, and I remember Allie saying after we won in '96, 'Well, that's it. Let's go retire.' I said, 'Let's see if we can do it again.'"

Torre became the fifth manager in baseball history to win at least four World Series.

Candidates need at least 12 of 16 votes from the committee to get into the Hall.

Former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner received fewer than six votes this year.

Also failing to get into the Hall via the committee was Marvin Miller, the former executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, who essentially created the strongest sports union in the country, leading to free agency, arbitration and multi-million-dollar salaries for players.
