City health officials have debuted a pair of TV ads intended to curb prescription painkiller abuse.
The ads tell the stories of two New York families impacted by the epidemic.
The first features a Staten Island mother whose 22-year-old son died from an overdose.
The second features an account from a city resident who received treatment for such addiction before it was too late.
Most abused painkillers include drugs such as Percocet, OxyContin and Vicodin.
Officials say that 190 New Yorkers died in 2012 from overdosing on them.
The Health Department says that the ads will run citywide on cable television now through mid-January.
