The movie moguls behind a new studio expansion say they want New York to be "Hollywood East."
Kaufman Studios unveiled the city's first California-style "backlot" at their Astoria complex Tuesday.
The backlot will allow filmmakers to shoot outdoor scenes in a controlled setting.
Studio executives praised the opening, saying it will keep disruptive movie shoots off the streets.
"Obviously, every production that's been in the building since we put up construction gates has used the street for a small shot, large shot, rehearsals," said Hal Rosenbluth, president of Kaufman Studios. It has been, you know, 'Wow, it's there, we can use it,' and it's been a belief that right away that said, 'OK, we weren't crazy.'"
Executives also hope the new addition will encourage more filmmakers to shoot in the city.
