A 22-year-old man is dead after he was shot by police in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. The man allegedly lunged at officers with a knife and knocked on a patrol car window with the weapon. Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.

A 22-year-old man is dead after a police involved shooting in Brooklyn.

According to police, officers responded to an alleged threat or attack on Hart Street at Wyckoff Avenue in Bushwick just after 3 p.m. Monday.

Investigators carefully recorded evidence, including shell casings from bullets fired by an officer and the knife police said the suspect wielded.

“I'm shocked right now I'm shocked because I just got home from work and I just found out it's my neighbor, right next-door,” said the neighbor.

Neighbors said they never expected Rexford Dasrath to try to hurt anyone, but police say he lunged at them with a knife so an officer shot and killed him.

"He got shot five times in the chest,” said a woman.

"And you saw five bullet holes?" asked a NY1 reporter.

"Yes, he was on the floor yes and the whole floor was full of blood," she said.

Police say initially a caller to 911 complained a man threatened to kill him with a knife

Officers responded to the address on Hart Street, but a man repeatedly hit their patrol car window with a knife and tossed a drinking glass, hitting a cab behind them.

When officers got out of the patrol car they say they repeatedly ordered the man, Dasrath, to drop the knife, but he suddenly moved at them.

“I was pretty scared. ‘Cause you know I walk around here there's a lot of kids around at that time exactly. That's the time that all the kids come out of school,” said the woman.

No one else was injured. Neighbors say the 22-year-old Dasrath lived with his mother, seemed nice and usually kept to himself.

“He seemed normal, he did, he did,” said the neighbor.

Police have not said if Dasrath had a criminal history. They have also not provided details on that initial 911 complaint that led to the confrontation with authorities. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
