The dolphin caught in a canal off Coney Island is dead.

The Riverhead Foundation says that the dolphin was found dead at approximately 11:30 a.m. Friday.

It was first spotted Thursday after officials say it swam in during low tide.

Police say that the animal could not exit because of a device used to block debris.

While officials cleared the device, the dolphin did not swim back out to sea at high tide.

Animal experts are now trying to determine how the animal died.
