The first three multi-family buildings to benefit from funding to repair Hurricane Sandy damage and storm-proof residences were announced Wednesday.

Public officials joined with residents for the announcement at Manhattan's Knickerbocker Village.

The complex will get nearly $1.5 million for Hurricane Sandy disaster relief under the city's Build it Back program.

The Knickerbocker buildings have more than 1,500 apartments.

"I am ecstatic," said Vivian Lazi, a tenant of the Knickerbocker Houses. "The devastation that struck Knickerbocker that October day was one that I would have never, never even dreamed of."

"Long-promised help has arrived and will continue to come, and we will restore it to permanent operation," said Knickerbocker tenant leader Bob Wilson.

Two large properties in the Rockaways will also be receiving a total of $1.1 million in financing through the program.
